‘Alī al Gharbī lies in Maysan Governorate in eastern Iraq, on the banks of the Tigris, not far from the border with Iran. From above, the town follows the river, with streets and buildings arranged along the bank and extending inland in a loose grid. Beyond them lie irrigated fields and then broad, flat, drier land.
The Tigris is the defining feature of the town and its surroundings, supplying water for farming along its banks. Main roads run parallel to the river and connect ‘Alī al Gharbī with Kut to the north-west and Amarah to the south-east, placing the town on an important route through the region.
An ‘Alī al Gharbī map poster shows a classic Mesopotamian relationship between town and river. The curves of the Tigris cross the frame, the streets line up along its bank, and the irrigated fields form a band of detail before the open plain. In black and white, the river becomes a strong, flowing centrepiece.
The Tigris curves through the frame, with the town arranged along its bank, the most prominent and distinctive feature of the map.
A main road follows the river, linking the town with Kut and Amarah and forming a strong line parallel to the water.
A band of cultivated land along the river gives way to open plain, creating a clear shift in texture across the composition.
