Aliwal North lies on the southern bank of the Orange River, which the town calls the Gariep. The river forms the border between the Eastern Cape and the Free State here. On the map, the town is a tidy grid of blocks that meets the broad curve of the river. Bridges carry the roads north across the water towards the Free State.
The town was founded in the 1840s and named by Sir Harry Smith after his victory at the Battle of Aliwal in India. It has long been known for its hot mineral springs, which have drawn visitors for generations. Its position on the main road between the Cape and the interior has made it a stopping point for travellers.
An Aliwal North map poster is shaped by the river. The water sweeps along one side of the town, and the straight streets end where the bank begins. Beyond the town, the map opens onto the wide, sparse Karoo-edge landscape. That space gives the dense centre a clear frame and a sense of scale.
The Gariep curves along the northern edge of town and marks the provincial border. It is the most prominent feature on the map.
Road bridges span the river and connect the Eastern Cape with the Free State. They draw firm lines across the water.
The central streets follow a regular grid laid out in the nineteenth century, and the blocks stop at the riverbank.
