Alkmaar is in North Holland, a short distance inland from the North Sea dunes. Its most striking feature on a map is the old town. The singel canal that follows the line of the old bastions still traces a jagged, star-like outline around the centre, and inside it narrow canals and streets fill a tight grid.
The Noordhollandsch Kanaal runs past the historic core and links the town to the waterways of the province. Outside the ring, later neighbourhoods spread in more regular blocks, crossed by drainage channels typical of reclaimed polder land. The contrast between the dense medieval centre and the open polders gives an Alkmaar map poster clear structure.
The town is known for its traditional cheese market, held on summer Fridays in front of the Waag, the old weigh house. Carriers still bring cheese wheels across the square on wooden barrows.
