Alzey lies in the heart of Rheinhessen, Germany's largest wine-growing region, in a gentle valley surrounded by vineyards and fields. From above, the old town is a small, irregular core of lanes around the market square and castle, bordered by later districts that spread outward in several directions. The land around it forms a patchwork of vineyard rows and farm parcels.
Tradition links the town to Volker von Alzey, the minstrel-knight of the Nibelungenlied, and it still calls itself the Volkerstadt.
