Armyansk is on the Perekop Isthmus, the narrow strip of land that connects the Crimean peninsula to the mainland. From above, the town is a compact grid of residential blocks and low houses on flat, open steppe. The Karkinit Gulf of the Black Sea lies to the west and the salt lagoons of the Syvash to the east. Few towns have such a clear geographic position.
The isthmus has been fortified for centuries. The remains of an old rampart and ditch known as the Turkish Wall cross the land near the town. The name Armyansk reflects the Armenian merchants who once traded here. On an Armyansk map poster at a wider extent, the earthwork appears as a long straight line across the neck of land.
The town grew in the Soviet period around a large chemical plant that produces titanium dioxide. Its industrial site and storage ponds lie outside the residential area. On the map these big rectangular forms contrast with the finer street grid and the irregular shorelines of the nearby lakes, which makes for an unusual and very graphic composition.
The land narrows here to only a few kilometres, with water on both sides. A wider map extent shows Armyansk as a small settlement at a true geographic bottleneck.
The historic rampart and ditch stretch across the isthmus as one long line. It is among the oldest human-made features in the area and a strong graphic element at wider extents.
Shallow salt lakes and lagoons lie around the town. Their irregular shorelines form pale shapes against the flat steppe and give the map much of its character.

Aiheā Armyansk
For people who grew up in Armyansk or have family there, the town's grid and the lakes around it are easy to recognise. Put a name in the title and a year in the subtitle, and keep the coordinates line as a precise geographic reference.
The stark geometry of the isthmus suits Noir and Blueprint especially well, while Classic, Paper and Sand give quieter results. HD files cost $9 for six print sizes in PNG and PDF. You can also order a printed matte poster, optionally in a wooden frame.
