Bad Mergentheim sits in the valley of the Tauber in northeastern Baden-Württemberg. On a map the river curves along the edge of a tight medieval centre. A castle complex sits at one end of the old town, and a long spa park runs beside the water. Newer districts climb the gentle slopes on both sides of the valley.
For almost three centuries, from 1525 to 1809, the town was the seat of the Grand Masters of the Teutonic Order. Their castle still dominates the east side of the old town and now houses a museum. In the nineteenth century mineral springs were found by the river, and Mergentheim became a spa town, which later added 'Bad' to its name.
