Bäherden lies in Ahal province in southern Turkmenistan, at the foot of the Kopet Dag range that marks the border with Iran. On a map the town sits between two very different landscapes: the rising folds of the mountains to the south and the open plain stretching north toward the Karakum desert. Its streets follow a largely regular pattern across the flat ground.
