Balbriggan lies on the coast of Fingal, at the northern edge of County Dublin. The map shows a town built around a small harbour, with the old centre set just behind the shore and side streets dropping toward the water. The coastline is simple and firm, a clean edge along the eastern side of the frame.
The Dublin to Belfast railway crosses the harbour on a stone viaduct built in the 1840s, one of the town's defining structures and a strong straight line on the map.
