Bandar Seri Begawan lies on the north bank of the Brunei River, a short distance upstream from Brunei Bay. The river defines its map. It bends broadly past the city centre, and across it spreads Kampong Ayer, a group of water villages built on stilts and joined by wooden walkways that appear as a fine lace of lines over the water.
On land, the compact centre is laid out in straight streets close to the riverbank, around the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and the artificial lagoon beside it. Beyond this core, roads curve through low, wooded hills and green reserves. Upstream to the west, the grounds of the Istana Nurul Iman, the Sultan's palace, stretch along the river.
The city was known as Brunei Town until 1970, when it was renamed in honour of the present Sultan's father. Kampong Ayer, often described as one of the largest stilt settlements in the world, has been lived in for centuries. A Bandar Seri Begawan map poster captures an unusual balance of land and water, where some of the most intricate streets are not on land at all.
Clusters of houses on stilts spread across the Brunei River, connected by boardwalks and footbridges. On the poster they form a delicate, net-like pattern floating on the water.
Beside the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, a small artificial lagoon puts a clean, rounded shape of water inside the grid of surrounding streets.
The river curves broadly past the city. Its wide channel divides the centre on land from the water villages and gives the composition its main line.

For Bruneians abroad, or anyone who has lived and worked in the sultanate, this map holds a very particular picture of home: the river, the water village, the mosque by its lagoon. It is also simply an unusual and striking piece of graphic geography.
