Bang Khun Thian is a district on the Thonburi side of Bangkok, reaching further south than any other part of the capital. It is the only Bangkok district with a coastline on the Gulf of Thailand. The map shows a gradient: dense housing and main roads in the north, then canals, ponds and field divisions, and finally a thin fringe of mangroves at the sea.
Much of the southern area was used for shrimp and fish farming, and the rectangular ponds create an almost geometric pattern. The coast here has been affected by serious erosion, and planting mangroves has become part of efforts to protect the shoreline. Rama II Road, a main route south out of Bangkok, crosses the district.
A Bang Khun Thian map poster shows a side of Bangkok few people picture, water, straight canals and open land rather than towers. It is a composition of lines and rectangles ending at the sea, unexpected and graphically striking.
The district is the only part of Bangkok touching the Gulf of Thailand, and its short coastline is lined by mangroves rather than beaches.
Straight canals and rectangular aquaculture ponds cover the southern part of the district, forming a precise geometric pattern on the map.
The major highway south from Bangkok crosses Bang Khun Thian, a strong line dividing the denser northern neighbourhoods from the watery lands toward the coast.
