Bangarapet is in Kolar district in southeastern Karnataka, on the dry plateau east of Bengaluru. The name is linked to the word for gold, and the town is close to the Kolar Gold Fields, where mining went on for more than a century. On a map, it is a compact town among fields, granite outcrops and many small irrigation lakes.
The railway defines the place. Bangarapet Junction is on the main line between Bengaluru and Chennai, and a branch line runs from here to the Kolar Gold Fields. The tracks cross the town and meet near the station, giving the map strong converging lines. Much of the town's growth has been shaped by the junction and its traffic.
Bangarapet is also known in Karnataka for its chaat, especially its pani puri, which people travel to try. A Bangarapet map poster brings together the railway lines, the dense lanes near the station and the scattered lakes, or kere, of the surrounding plateau, a combination that gives the print both structure and softness.
The Bengaluru–Chennai main line and the branch line to the Kolar Gold Fields meet at the town, drawing strong converging lines through its centre.
Small irrigation lakes, or kere, are scattered across the countryside around the town and add rounded, irregular shapes to the map.
The Kolar Gold Fields, once among the deepest gold mines in the world, lie close by and connect the town's name and history to mining.
