Barnstaple sits on the River Taw near the head of its estuary in North Devon, where the smaller River Yeo flows in from the north. It is one of the oldest boroughs in England, and for centuries it was an important port and market town. On a map, the compact old centre lies on the east bank of the Taw, with the estuary widening quickly to the west.
The Long Bridge, a medieval stone bridge with a series of arches, crosses the Taw from the town centre, and its line is still one of the defining shapes on the map. In the centre, the Victorian Pannier Market and the small shops of Butchers Row form the heart of the old streets. Later neighbourhoods spread onto the hills around the valley.
A Barnstaple map poster captures the mix of river and town: a winding tidal channel, low-lying marshland, bridges and a dense centre that grew up around trade. The course of an old railway line, now part of the Tarka Trail, follows the estuary as a smooth curve, adding one more long line to the design.
The medieval bridge crosses the Taw directly from the town centre, one of the few crossings for miles, and appears as a strong line spanning the wide river.
West of the town, the river opens into a broad tidal estuary with sandbanks and marshes, a flowing shape that fills the left side of the map.
The Pannier Market and Butchers Row sit in the tight grid of old streets near the river, the historic commercial heart of North Devon.
