Barranca lies on Peru's arid Pacific coast, north of Lima, and serves as capital of the province of the same name. The word barranca means a ravine or steep bank, and the city takes its name from the landscape: much of it sits on a raised shelf of land, with beaches below the edge of the bluff and the ocean stretching west.
On a map, the city appears as a regular grid on the tableland, bordered by the long straight coastline on one side and cultivated valley land on the other. The Pan-American Highway passes nearby, and the Pativilca and Supe valleys to the north and south form irrigated bands through otherwise dry terrain. The province is also home to Caral, one of the oldest known urban sites in the Americas.
A Barranca map poster sets the orderly blocks against the clean line of the Pacific shore. The ocean takes up a broad, quiet part of the composition, the grid supplies the detail, and the drop between them carries the idea behind the city's name.
The city sits on raised ground over the shoreline, so the coast on the map reads as a sharp boundary between dense streets and open water.
Barranca's core follows a clear rectilinear plan, a steady pattern of blocks that looks crisp and architectural in black and white.
Nearby valleys carry water from the Andes to the coast, crossing the dry plain as lines of fields, roads and settlements.
