Bay Point is an unincorporated community in Contra Costa County, California, on the southern shore of Suisun Bay. Its map divides neatly into bands. Tidal marsh and shoreline lie to the north and homes fill the middle. State Route 4 runs east to west, and dry, grassy hills rise to the south. Neighbouring Pittsburg lies to the east, with Concord beyond the hills to the southwest.
Until 1993 the community was known as West Pittsburg, and it took the name Bay Point partly to establish its own identity. In 1996 the Pittsburg/Bay Point BART station opened beside the freeway, and for many years it was the eastern end of the line. Military and industrial land to the west gives that side of the map a sparse, open character.
A Bay Point map poster shows curving suburban streets pressed between water and hills, with the long straight line of the freeway and rail through the middle. The marsh channels along the bay are especially beautiful in monochrome, fine branching lines against open white. It is a grounded, recognisable portrait of an East Bay community that often goes unnoticed.
Tidal marsh and winding sloughs line the northern edge. Their branching channels are drawn as fine lines that give the top of the print a delicate, organic texture.
State Route 4 and the BART line run side by side across the community. Together they form a strong horizontal band that divides the neighbourhoods and anchors the composition.
Grassy hills rise south of the residential streets, leaving a broad open area where only a few roads and trails climb. They frame the town from below.
