Belmonte stands on the south coast of Bahia at the mouth of the Jequitinhonha River, which rises far inland in Minas Gerais. The town occupies a low strip of land beside the river. From above, its grid of short streets looks small against the broad water, the sandbars at the river mouth and the long, straight Atlantic beach running away on either side.
For much of its history Belmonte's economy was tied to cacao, the crop that shaped the fortunes of southern Bahia, and old townhouses from that period still stand in the centre. The river also linked the coast with the interior. Mangroves and wetlands along the estuary add soft, irregular shapes to the map.
