Benicia sits on the northern shore of the Carquinez Strait in Solano County, where the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers flow west toward San Francisco Bay. The historic downtown is laid out in a regular grid that slopes gently down to the water, with First Street as its main axis ending at the shoreline. Behind it, low grassy hills rise to the north.
Benicia served as the capital of California for about a year in the 1850s, and its brick State Capitol building still stands downtown. The town was named after Francisca Benicia Carrillo de Vallejo, wife of General Mariano Vallejo. East of the centre, the former Benicia Arsenal, the port, a refinery and the Benicia–Martinez Bridge fill the waterfront.
A Benicia map poster shows a town defined by its shoreline. The strait sweeps along the bottom of the frame, the downtown grid meets it at a clean edge, and the bridge crosses the water in a long, straight line. Residential streets curve up into the hills, adding softness to an otherwise orderly composition.
The historic main street runs straight down to the strait through the centre of the old grid. On the poster it forms the town's main axis, ending at the water.
The strait forms a broad band of water along the southern edge of town. Its shoreline, piers and marina give the map a strong horizontal base.
East of downtown, the bridge spans the strait toward Martinez. Its long, straight line across the water is one of the most recognisable features of the composition.
