Bethlehem stands on a ridge in the Judaean hills, about ten kilometres south of Jerusalem, in the West Bank. For Christians around the world it is known as the birthplace of Jesus. The Church of the Nativity and the pilgrimage route leading to it have been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The old town is built along the ridge, and its streets bend with the terrain instead of following a grid.
