From above, Bideford is shaped by the River Torridge, which widens into a tidal estuary as it heads toward the sea. The older town climbs the steep west bank in a tight knot of lanes rising from the quay. East-the-Water faces it on the opposite shore, a smaller grid of streets pressed against its own hillside. Between them the river runs as a broad, clean band of white.
The two halves are stitched together by the Long Bridge, a medieval crossing of many stone arches that still carries traffic into the town centre. Further downstream the Torridge Bridge carries the main road high over the estuary in one long, straight line. On a Bideford map poster the difference is easy to see: a short, sturdy crossing at the heart of town and a sweeping bypass on its edge.
Beyond the built-up area the lines loosen into lanes and field boundaries that run over the North Devon hills. The river keeps widening northward toward Appledore and the open water of Bideford Bay. The old railway line along the bank, now part of the Tarka Trail, shows as a thin path that follows the water. Bideford was once a busy port, and the long quay still outlines the western bank.
A medieval stone bridge of many arches linking the quay to East-the-Water, still the main crossing at the centre of town and the oldest line drawn across the river.
The high road bridge downstream carries the A39 across the estuary in a single straight stroke, framing the northern edge of the town on the map.
A long, straight riverside frontage on the west bank where ships once loaded, now a promenade that sets a firm edge between the dense old town and the open water.

Aiheā Bideford
People hang a map of Bideford because they grew up above the quay, spent summers in North Devon or walked the Tarka Trail beside the river. The estuary and its two bridges give the print a clear, recognisable shape even from across a room.
The design can be personalised with your own title, a subtitle such as a date or family name, and the coordinates line. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then download HD files for $9 or order a printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
