Boende is the capital of Tshuapa Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and it lies on the Tshuapa River deep within the equatorial forest. From above, the town appears as a modest opening in the green, with its streets reaching back from the riverbank and the water curving past on its slow way toward the Congo.
