Bolton is the largest community in the Town of Caledon, north-west of Toronto in Peel Region. It began as a mill settlement where the Humber River cuts through the landscape. On a map, the older streets still gather close to the valley and cross the river on a handful of bridges. Around that centre, newer residential areas spread out in the loops and crescents typical of Ontario's growing towns.
Highway 50 runs through town as the main north-south route. The Humber valley stays green on both sides of the river, drawing a soft, winding line through the middle of the map. North of town the land rises toward the Oak Ridges Moraine, while fields and industrial parks stretch south toward Brampton and Vaughan.
A Bolton map poster suits families who have settled here and people who grew up near the river. It also suits anyone who knows these streets from years of school runs, hockey practices and weekend walks along the Humber. It captures, in a single frame, the town's shift from historic village to modern suburb.
The river winds through the centre of Bolton in a green corridor. It is the strongest natural line on the map and separates older streets from newer ones.
The historic centre, where the original settlement grew up around a mill on the river, has a tighter, older street pattern than the neighbourhoods around it.
Residential areas built in recent decades form curving streets, cul-de-sacs and loops that give the outer map a distinctive, almost organic texture.
