Bom Jesus do Itabapoana is in the northwest of Rio de Janeiro state, where the Itabapoana River marks the boundary with Espírito Santo. The town has grown along the south bank, and across the water stands Bom Jesus do Norte, its smaller neighbour in the other state. Bridges tie the two together into one continuous urban area divided by the river.
The surrounding landscape is hilly, with the rolling relief typical of the interior of northwestern Rio de Janeiro. Streets follow the valley floor near the river, then climb and curve as they reach the slopes, so the plan mixes a straighter centre with more irregular neighbourhoods at the edges. Farms and pasture take over quickly beyond the built-up area.
On a Bom Jesus do Itabapoana map poster the river runs through the composition as a strong curving line, with streets gathered on both banks. It is an unusual picture of a place split between two states yet lived as one town, and the balance of water, grid and hillside makes it work well at any size.
The river crosses the frame and doubles as a state boundary, giving the map a clear central line that separates Rio de Janeiro from Espírito Santo.
Bom Jesus do Norte on the opposite bank mirrors the main town, and the bridges between them show how closely the two communities are bound together.
Level streets near the water give way to winding roads as the terrain rises, creating a clear contrast between the compact centre and the looser outer districts.
