Bracknell lies in east Berkshire, between Reading and London, and was designated as one of the post-war new towns in 1949. The map shows its planned character immediately. A central shopping area is surrounded by self-contained neighbourhoods, each with its own curving roads and cul-de-sacs. Distributor roads tie them together, joined by a notable number of roundabouts.
The town grew around a small existing village, and its neighbourhoods were added in stages over several decades. For many years Bracknell was home to the Met Office, until it moved to Exeter in 2003. The town centre has since been largely rebuilt, and woodland and parkland surround much of the town, especially to the south.
A Bracknell map poster turns this planned layout into an intriguing pattern: self-contained estates, sweeping main roads, the railway crossing from east to west and pockets of green between them. It is a striking study in twentieth-century town planning, and residents will recognise it at a glance.
Main roads loop around and between the estates, joined by many roundabouts. They give the map a distinctive rhythm of circles and curves.
Each residential area forms its own enclosed pattern of winding streets and closes. This planned, cell-like structure is typical of British new towns.
Forest and heathland stretch toward the south of the town. They appear as broad open areas framing the edge of the built-up zone.

Aiheā Bracknell
Bracknell is often underrated, yet its planned layout is one of the most graphic street patterns in southern England. The poster makes a thoughtful gift for people who grew up on one of its estates or spent years commuting from here.
