Brixham occupies the southern corner of Torbay in Devon, facing north across the bay toward Paignton and Torquay. The town is built around its harbour, and the map shows it clearly: quays and a long breakwater at the centre, then houses packed onto slopes that rise steeply on every side, with lanes stepping up in tight curves and terraces.
It remains one of the most important fishing ports in England, with a large fish market on the quay. In 1688 William of Orange landed here at the start of the Glorious Revolution, and a statue on the harbour marks the event. A full-size replica of Francis Drake's Golden Hind is moored in the inner harbour.
A Brixham map poster is shaped by the sea. The harbour and breakwater form a strong focal point, the curving streets radiate uphill from the water, and to the east the headland of Berry Head, with its Napoleonic-era forts and lighthouse, pushes out into the Channel. The coastline gives the whole sheet a clear, confident outline.
The working harbour sits at the heart of the town, enclosed by a long breakwater that reaches into Torbay and draws a firm line on the water.
From the quays, narrow streets and paths climb the hillsides in tight bends, creating a dense, intricate pattern around the harbour basin.
The headland east of town ends in steep cliffs above the sea, its forts and lighthouse set on open ground that contrasts with the packed streets below.
