Burdur sits in the Lakes Region of southwestern Anatolia, just south of Lake Burdur. The city climbs gently from the lower ground near the lake toward the hills. On a map, a compact older core is surrounded by newer neighbourhoods on a more regular layout, with the long outline of the lake stretching away to the northwest.
Lake Burdur is a saline lake known for its birdlife, including flamingos and white-headed ducks. It has shrunk noticeably in recent decades, and its shoreline has moved as the water retreated. The province is also home to the ancient city of Sagalassos in the mountains to the south, and finds from the area fill the Burdur Museum.
