From above, Carson City sits in Eagle Valley, where the eastern wall of the Sierra Nevada meets the Great Basin. The downtown blocks form a tidy grid around the state capitol, and the streets loosen into curving subdivisions as they reach the foothills. To the west, the contour lines tighten quickly into the Carson Range. To the east, the land flattens toward the Carson River.
Carson City is the capital of Nevada and one of the few American cities that is also an independent city, with no county around it. The town takes its name from the Carson River, which in turn was named after the frontiersman Kit Carson. The state capitol, known for its silver-coloured dome, stands at the centre of the old grid, a reminder of the silver mining era that built the state.
A Carson City map poster shows how sharply the town ends. Streets that run straight across the valley stop where the mountains start, and highway lines trace the corridor north toward Reno and south toward the Carson Valley. In black and white, the contrast between the dense centre and the empty slopes around it is the whole picture.

West of town, the streets thin out and stop where the Sierra Nevada foothills rise. Lake Tahoe lies just beyond the ridge, out of sight from the valley floor.
The Carson River curves along the eastern side of the valley, and its channel and floodplain leave a soft, open band that marks where the city gives way to the basin.

Aiheā Carson City
People who have lived or worked in Nevada's capital often want the town's shape on the wall, a small grid held between the mountains and the desert. It suits a home office, a hallway or a gift for someone who has moved away from Eagle Valley.
You can change the title, subtitle and coordinates line to mark an address, a year or a personal note, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The digital HD files cost $9, and printed posters on matte paper, with an optional wooden frame, are also available.
