Cecina lies on the Tuscan coast in the province of Livorno, where the river of the same name reaches the Tyrrhenian Sea. From above, the map shows two parts: the main town a short way inland, arranged around a fairly regular grid, and Marina di Cecina on the shore. A strip of coastal pine woodland lies between them and along the beach.
The town developed largely in the nineteenth century after the drainage of the coastal marshes, which explains its orderly street layout compared with the hill towns of inland Tuscany. The pinewoods along the shore are protected and are now among the area's best-known features. In summer the marina fills with visitors to the beaches of the Etruscan Coast.
