Cedar Falls sits on the Cedar River in north-east Iowa, beside its larger neighbour Waterloo. The river runs through the northern part of the city, and the historic downtown lies just south of it, where Main Street runs as a straight spine through blocks of brick buildings. The falls that gave the town its name once powered its early mills.
South of downtown, the regular Midwestern grid spreads out, broken by the campus of the University of Northern Iowa, with its quads, lawns and curving paths.
