Chadderton lies in the borough of Oldham in Greater Manchester, between Oldham itself and the northern outskirts of Manchester. On a map it is a continuous spread of residential streets, older terraces near the main roads and newer estates farther out, with the Rochdale Canal running along one side and parks and playing fields scattered through the town.
In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Chadderton was a cotton town, with large spinning mills rising among the houses. Several of those big rectangular mill buildings still stand, and on the map they show up as bold blocks within the finer mesh of terraced streets. Their scale is a reminder of how central the industry once was.
