The sector grid
Rectangular sectors laid out in even rows and numbered across the city. The pattern is precise enough to read at a glance, and no other Indian city looks like it.

Chandigarh is one of the clearest planned cities in the world. After Partition, it was designed as a new capital for Punjab, with Le Corbusier leading the plan in the early 1950s. The city is divided into rectangular sectors, each roughly a kilometre across. They are numbered and arranged in a grid that reads on the map like a chessboard.
The roads follow a strict hierarchy, from fast arterials between sectors down to local streets inside them. Every sector has its own market and green space. There is famously no Sector 13. To the north, near the Shivalik foothills, lies the Capitol Complex, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beside it is Sukhna Lake, a man-made reservoir.
Running through the city is the Leisure Valley, a long green belt that follows a seasonal stream. Nearby is Nek Chand's Rock Garden, made from recycled materials. A Chandigarh map poster is almost a diagram. Few cities show their plan so clearly from above.

A reservoir at the north-eastern edge near the Shivalik foothills. Its soft outline breaks the geometry of the grid.

Aiheā Chandigarh
Chandigarh appeals to anyone who admires modernist architecture, and to the many who grew up in its sectors and know their home by its number. The grid makes a sharp, graphic print.
Add a sector number, a family name or a year in the title and subtitle, and personalise the coordinates line. Blueprint suits the city's planned character, but Classic black & white, Noir, Paper and Sand are also available.
