Chengannūr is a town in Alappuzha district, Kerala, on the banks of the Pamba River. The terrain here marks a transition between the low-lying backwater region to the west and the gentle midland hills to the east. From above, the town appears as a dense core of streets around its temple and market, loosening into houses spread among trees, paddy and waterways.
The Chengannur Mahadeva Temple is the best-known landmark in the town, and its compound forms a clear, rectangular space within the street pattern. The railway station is an important stop for pilgrims heading toward Sabarimala, and the line runs through the town from north to south. In 2018, Chengannūr was among the places most severely affected by the Kerala floods.
A Chengannūr map poster keeps the essential elements together: the bends of the Pamba, the rail line, the temple precinct and the network of roads that thread between homes and waterways. It is a meaningful piece for Keralites living elsewhere, and a calm reminder of a landscape where river and settlement are closely intertwined.
The river winds along the town in wide curves, a strong natural line that defines one edge of the map and ties Chengannūr to the wider waterways of central Kerala.
The Mahadeva Temple compound stands out as a rectangular space near the centre, with streets arranged around it in the pattern of a traditional temple town.
The railway crosses the map from north to south, a straight, continuous line through a street network that otherwise curves with the land.
