Chesterfield lies in the western part of St. Louis County, where upland suburbs look down on the Missouri River floodplain. It splits into two distinct areas. On the hills, curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs wind between wooded ridges. Below, the Chesterfield Valley stretches flat towards the river, with long, straight roads and large commercial buildings.
Interstate 64 crosses the Missouri here, linking Chesterfield to St. Charles County, and major roads connect the city to central St. Louis in the east. The valley was badly flooded during the 1993 Missouri River flood. Afterwards, it was rebuilt with stronger levees and has since become a major shopping and business district.
