Ciudad Delicias was founded in 1933 as the centre of a new irrigation district in the state of Chihuahua, and its map still shows that planned origin. The streets follow a deliberate geometry, with a central plaza from which the main avenues extend outward and a regular pattern of numbered streets filling the spaces between them. It is a town designed on paper before it was built.
Around the city lies one of northern Mexico's most productive farming areas, watered by canals drawing on the Conchos and San Pedro rivers. From above, the surrounding land is divided into long rectangular fields crossed by irrigation channels, a sharp contrast to the dry hills and desert beyond. Cotton, pecans and chile have all been important crops here.
