Clausthal-Zellerfeld lies high in the Upper Harz in Lower Saxony, formed when two neighboring mining towns, Clausthal and Zellerfeld, merged in 1924. On a map you can still see two cores, each with its own grid of streets, now joined by a common main road. Around them, forest and open plateau stretch out in every direction.
What sets the place apart from above is water. For centuries miners built ponds, ditches and tunnels to power the machinery that drained and worked the silver mines. Many of these ponds survive, and together with nearby sites they form part of the Upper Harz Water Management System, listed by UNESCO as World Heritage alongside Rammelsberg and Goslar.
The town is also home to Clausthal University of Technology, which grew out of the old mining academy, and to a large wooden market church. A Clausthal-Zellerfeld map poster shows a plan shaped almost entirely by industry: streets laid out for miners, and a landscape dotted with small, carefully engineered lakes.
Dozens of small reservoirs scatter across the surrounding plateau, each one a precise shape on the map, part of a historic system built to feed water wheels for the mines.
The former towns of Clausthal and Zellerfeld keep distinct street patterns, and the poster shows where the two plans meet along the connecting main road.
The buildings of the technical university sit within the town fabric, a reminder that mining knowledge was taught here long after the mines themselves closed.

Aiheā Clausthal-Zellerfeld
Students of the university, Harz hikers and families with mining roots hang this map for the same reason: the plan tells the story of the place. Streets, ponds and forest edges are all history you can read without a caption.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with a graduation year, and pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download the $9 HD files in six print sizes, or order a printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
