Clayton is in Johnston County, North Carolina, a short drive southeast of Raleigh. The town grew up along the North Carolina Railroad in the nineteenth century, and its older centre still follows that line, with a straight main street and a modest grid of blocks on either side. In recent decades it has become one of the faster-growing commuter towns around the Triangle region.
The map records that growth plainly. Around the compact downtown, subdivisions spread out with the curving streets and cul-de-sacs typical of newer American suburbs, while US 70 and its bypass carry traffic toward Raleigh.
