Coalinga lies in Fresno County, California, on the western edge of the San Joaquin Valley, where the flat farmland meets the dry foothills of the Diablo Range. The map shows a compact town with a regular grid of streets. Around it spreads a broad, open landscape of rolling hills, ranch land and fields reaching toward the valley floor.
The name is said to come from Coaling Station A, a railway stop built to serve coal mines in the area. It was oil, however, that shaped the town's growth. The surrounding hills are marked by the roads and well pads of long-established oil fields. On the map they appear as a delicate network of lines scattered across otherwise empty terrain.
In 1983 a strong earthquake severely damaged the city's downtown, much of which was later rebuilt. A Coalinga map poster captures the modern town alongside the oil fields and hills around it. It is a clear portrait of the western side of the Central Valley, not far from Interstate 5 and the route between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The town centre follows a regular grid of streets. This compact, ordered shape stands out against the open, uneven terrain that surrounds it on all sides.
To the west, the land rises into the dry foothills of the Diablo Range. There the street pattern ends, and the map becomes open and spacious.
