Colton lies in the San Bernardino Valley, just southwest of San Bernardino, on flat ground that falls gently toward the Santa Ana River. From above it is a mesh of mostly rectilinear residential streets broken up by heavy infrastructure. Interstate 10 runs east to west, Interstate 215 runs north to south, and wide rail corridors spread across the town.
The city grew up around the railroad and takes its name from David Colton, an executive of the Southern Pacific. It is known for the Colton Crossing, where two transcontinental main lines met at grade for more than a century until a flyover opened in 2013. On a map the crossing shows as a clear X of track near the middle of the plan.
A Colton map poster shows a working landscape, not a postcard view. The braided bed of the Santa Ana River curves through the western side, freeway interchanges draw wide loops, and the rail lines cut the grid into separate neighbourhoods, each set at its own slight angle. The result is graphic, busy and unmistakably Southern Californian.

The river is often a wide sandy wash rather than a channel of water, and on the map it appears as a pale, braided band running diagonally along the city's western side.
Interstates 10 and 215 meet in and around Colton. Their ramps and overpasses form sweeping curves that contrast sharply with the straight residential blocks around them.

Aiheā Colton
Colton appeals to rail enthusiasts, Inland Empire families and anyone who has spent years driving these freeways. It is a map of connections, where tracks, roads and river all cross, and that gives it a strong structure on the wall.
Add a personal title, a subtitle such as a neighbourhood or family name, and a meaningful date, and adjust the coordinates line. The five styles are Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Blueprint suits the city's railroad identity especially well.
