Columbus lies on the east bank of the Tombigbee River in northeastern Mississippi, near the Alabama state line. The map shows a regular grid of streets in the older centre, set back from the river, with neighbourhoods of historic houses spreading north and south and newer development extending east. The river and its wide floodplain form a strong, curving edge on the western side.
The city is home to Mississippi University for Women, founded in 1884 as the first public college for women in the United States, and it is the birthplace of playwright Tennessee Williams. Columbus is also known for its many antebellum homes, and it is one of several places that claim a role in the origins of Memorial Day.
A Columbus map poster traces a Southern river town with a strong sense of structure. The grid of the historic centre, the campus near downtown, the river crossings and the curve of the Tombigbee make a composition that is orderly yet shaped by nature. It suits alumni, longtime residents and anyone who has studied or served here.
The river curves along the western side of the city, with bridges crossing to the opposite bank and a wide band of floodplain softening the map's edge.
The older centre follows a regular grid, with blocks of historic homes that have made the city a destination for its annual spring pilgrimage tours.
Mississippi University for Women occupies a campus close to downtown, its paths and green spaces standing out as a distinct pattern within the grid.
