Cono Norte is the name used for Arequipa's northern growth area, where the city has spread across high desert ground away from its colonial centre. On a map the difference is immediate. Instead of the historic blocks of the old core, you see newer neighbourhoods laid out in regular grids, each with its own orientation and fitted against ravines and slopes.
The terrain shapes almost everything here. Dry gullies cut through the settlement and leave gaps and diagonal breaks between districts, while the main avenues climb gently toward the north. The surrounding land is arid and open, so the edges of the street network are sharp, with little transition between built-up blocks and empty ground.
Behind it all stand the volcanoes that define Arequipa: Chachani to the north and Misti further east, visible from almost every street. A Cono Norte map poster shows a part of the city that is rarely pictured, a place of recent growth and everyday routes rather than monuments, drawn with the same care as the historic centre.
Each neighbourhood seems to have been planned on its own axis. From above they fit together like tiles, creating a lively geometry of shifting street directions.
Dry channels run down from higher ground and interrupt the grid. These natural breaks give the poster its structure and hint at the landscape beneath the streets.
The main avenues climb toward the mountains that frame Arequipa, and the built-up area thins as the ground rises, leaving open space at the top of the sheet.

Aiheā Cono Norte
For families who built their homes here, often over several decades, the grid of Cono Norte can mean more than the historic centre. A map records those streets as they are, not the postcard city most visitors see.
Personalise the title and subtitle with a neighbourhood, a family name or the date you moved in. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download the HD files for $9, or order a printed poster with an optional frame.
