Corpus Christi wraps around the western shore of Corpus Christi Bay on the Texas Gulf Coast. Water shapes almost every part of the map. The downtown faces the bay behind a stepped seawall, and the ship channel and port cut inland to the north. Farther out, the long thin barrier islands of Mustang and Padre separate the bay and the Laguna Madre from the open Gulf.
The downtown seawall was designed by Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore, and it gives the bayfront its smooth, even edge.
