Dambulla lies in the centre of Sri Lanka, where main roads from Colombo, Kandy, Anuradhapura and Trincomalee converge. On a map that role is obvious: long highways arrive from several directions and meet in a small grid of streets, while the rest of the landscape is given over to paddy fields, scrub forest and the reservoirs typical of the island's dry zone.
At the edge of town rises the rock of the Dambulla cave temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its five caves hold Buddhist statues and painted ceilings, and they have been a place of pilgrimage for over two thousand years. On the map the rock appears as an irregular open patch among the surrounding streets, a quiet shape with great significance.
Dambulla is also home to one of the country's largest wholesale vegetable markets, and Sigiriya rock lies a short drive to the north-east. A Dambulla map poster captures this meeting point of roads, fields and water in a clear, balanced composition in which the highways do much of the drawing and the landscape fills the rest.
The large granite outcrop with its cave shrines forms an open patch at the edge of town, one of the most recognisable features on the whole map.
Main roads toward Kandy, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee and Colombo meet in the town, giving the poster a strong, clear star-shaped structure at its centre.
Irrigation reservoirs and rice fields surround the built-up area, their outlines adding soft, irregular shapes to the dry-zone landscape around the streets.

Aiheā Dambulla
Travellers remember Dambulla as a stop between Kandy and the ancient cities, the place where they climbed to the caves before heading on to Sigiriya. For them, and for the people who live here, the map is a way to keep that crossroads on the wall.
