Dashu is a small town in the mountainous northeast of Chongqing municipality, in the rugged country north of the Yangtze near the Three Gorges. In this landscape, level ground is scarce, and settlements follow whatever valley floors and gentler slopes the terrain allows. Roads twist through the hills to reach them, often doubling back on themselves as they climb.
The map shows a settlement shaped almost entirely by relief. Streets run in narrow bands along the valley, buildings crowd close to the main road, and the network ends abruptly where slopes become too steep to build on. Switchback roads leave town as tight, looping lines, and the open space around them hints at the ridges that dominate the region.
