Rail junction
Several main lines meet here, and the yards spread into broad bundles of parallel tracks. On the poster they read as the town's spine, stronger than any street.

De Aar grew around the railway. It is one of the most important rail junctions in South Africa, where lines from the Cape, the north and the east meet in the middle of the Northern Cape. On a map the tracks are the dominant feature: wide fans of sidings, and long straight lines running out of town across the flat Karoo in different directions.
The residential streets form a modest grid beside the rail yards, with low density and plenty of open ground between blocks. The name is Afrikaans for the artery, and it is usually linked to the underground water that made settlement possible in this dry country. The writer Olive Schreiner lived in the town for several years in the early twentieth century.
A De Aar map poster captures something unusual: a town whose shape comes from infrastructure rather than from a river or a coast. Around the edges the street lines thin out quickly into semi-arid land. The composition has a strong centre and a wide, quiet margin, which suits the minimal black-and-white treatment well.
Several main lines meet here, and the yards spread into broad bundles of parallel tracks. On the poster they read as the town's spine, stronger than any street.
Beyond the last blocks the land opens out almost immediately. The map shows long, empty stretches crossed only by straight roads and railway lines heading toward the horizon.
Residential streets follow a simple rectangular pattern beside the rail lands. They give the centre a regular texture that contrasts with the sweeping curves of the tracks.
