Debre Birhan sits high on the Ethiopian plateau in the Amhara region, at roughly 2,800 metres, which makes it one of the coolest towns of its size in the country. On a map it appears as a spreading grid of streets around the highway that runs north from Addis Ababa toward Dessie. Open farmland and grazing land stretch away on every side.
The town has a long history. Emperor Zara Yaqob founded it in the fifteenth century, and its name, often translated as Mount of Light, is linked to a luminous sign in the sky reported during his reign. For a time it served as a royal seat before the court moved on. The name still anchors the town's identity today.
In recent years Debre Birhan has grown quickly as an industrial town, and the new districts on its edges follow a looser, wider plan than the older core. A Debre Birhan map poster shows that expansion clearly. The central road acts as a spine, the grid fills in around it, and the high plateau lies beyond, drawn in clean lines against a quiet background.
The main road from Addis Ababa to the north cuts straight through the town. Most of the street network branches from it, giving the map a clear central axis.
At close to 2,800 metres, the town is surrounded by wide, open upland. The map's outer areas show a sparse pattern of tracks and farmland rather than dense streets.
Debre Birhan has long been known for woollen blankets and carpets woven from highland sheep. The craft is tied to the cold climate, which the open landscape around the town makes easy to picture.

Aiheā Debre Birhan
For people from the town or with family ties to the Amhara highlands, Debre Birhan carries a history that reaches back to the imperial era. Its map is simple and clearly structured, and it makes a grounded piece for a home or office far from the plateau.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be written as you like, for example a family name or a meaningful date. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand echoes the warm tones of the dry season.
