Decatur is the county seat of DeKalb County, just east of Atlanta, and one of the oldest cities in the metro area. Its map centres on Decatur Square, where the historic DeKalb County Courthouse stands. From there, a network of streets spreads out through tree-lined residential neighbourhoods, many of them laid out in the early twentieth century.
The city is known for its compact, walkable downtown, and a MARTA rail station sits right beneath the square, linking Decatur directly with Atlanta. Agnes Scott College, a liberal arts college founded in the nineteenth century, occupies a green campus a short walk from the centre, and its lawns are a clear open shape on the map.
