Dien Bien Phu lies in the Mường Thanh valley in the far north-west of Vietnam, close to the border with Laos. The valley is one of the largest flat basins in the region, a long plain of rice fields enclosed by steep, forested mountains. The Nậm Rốm River runs through it from north to south, and the city stretches along its banks.
The name is known worldwide from the battle of 1954, when Vietnamese forces defeated the French garrison after a long siege, which effectively ended the First Indochina War. Hills that were fought over, including Hill A1, stand inside the city today. The former French command bunker and a museum are also part of the historic landscape.
A Dien Bien Phu map poster shows how geography shaped history here. The flat valley floor, the river and the ring of mountains form a natural enclosure, and the city's streets fill the space between them. It suits travellers, people interested in history and families from the valley, and offers a calm portrait of a place whose name carries great weight.
The broad, flat basin surrounded by mountains frames the city on every side, so the poster reads as a clear picture of a settlement held inside its landscape.
The river runs through the middle of the valley and the city. Its winding line ties the streets together and gives the composition a natural spine.
Small hills inside the city, including Hill A1, rise from the valley floor and appear as open spaces among the streets, marking sites of the 1954 battle.
