Duoba lies in Huangzhong District on the western side of Xining, the capital of Qinghai province. It sits in a river valley well over two thousand metres above sea level, on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. From above, the town is shaped by that valley: a long, stretched settlement where roads, rail and housing run side by side along the floor, with dry hills pressing in from both sides.
The Huangshui River runs through the valley toward Xining, and much of the street pattern follows its line. Newer development has filled the flatter ground with larger rectangular blocks, while older lanes and farm plots remain closer to the slopes. On a map, the town reads as a band of dense lines tightening and widening with the valley, framed by empty space where the terrain rises.
