Ellis Island lies in Upper New York Bay, just off the Jersey City waterfront and within sight of Lower Manhattan. It began as a small natural island and was greatly enlarged with landfill over the years. From above, its sections wrap around a central ferry slip, giving it a squared, harbour-like outline with straight, engineered edges.
From 1892 to 1954 it was the busiest immigration station in the United States, and more than twelve million people passed through its halls. The main building, with its large registry room, is now the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. A service bridge connects the island to Liberty State Park in New Jersey.
Jurisdiction was disputed for decades; a 1998 Supreme Court ruling placed the original island in New York and the landfill additions in New Jersey. An Ellis Island map poster frames the island within its surroundings: the ferry routes across the bay, the old rail terminal and parkland of the Jersey shore and, depending on the frame, the tip of Manhattan.
The island's sections are arranged around a central slip where ferries dock, a rectangular inlet of water that gives the island its distinctive notched shape.
Most of today's island is fill added around the original islet, visible on the map as straight, engineered edges rather than a natural shoreline.
Across a narrow channel to the west, the New Jersey park and its historic rail terminal frame the island on its landward side.
