Estero lies in Lee County on Florida's southwest coast, between Fort Myers to the north and Bonita Springs to the south. From above, it is a patchwork of planned communities: curving roads, cul-de-sacs, lakes dug for drainage and golf courses, broken up by the more natural shapes of wetlands and preserved land toward the coast.
The Estero River winds westward through the village to Estero Bay, a shallow estuary protected as an aquatic preserve. Along the river lies Koreshan State Park, the site of a utopian settlement founded in the late nineteenth century by the Koreshan Unity. Estero incorporated as a village only in 2014, making it one of the younger municipalities in the state.
An Estero map poster captures the distinctive look of southwest Florida development, with its loops and retention lakes, alongside the older, meandering line of the river and the mangrove edges of the bay. In black and white the contrast between planned curves and natural water is especially striking.

Beside the river lies the site of the Koreshan Unity settlement, a nineteenth-century utopian community whose historic buildings are now part of a state park.
Planned neighbourhoods fill much of the map with curving streets, cul-de-sacs and small retention lakes, creating a very recognisable southwest Florida pattern.
