Europa Island Map Poster & Print
Europa Island lies in the southern Mozambique Channel, between Madagascar and the African mainland, and belongs to France as one of the Scattered Islands of the Indian Ocean. It is a low coral island, roughly round, with a fringing reef around its shore and, at its centre, a shallow tidal lagoon lined with mangroves.
There is no permanent civilian population. A small French presence, including a weather station, has long been maintained there, and a straight airstrip crosses part of the island, the most obvious man-made line on the map. Otherwise the land is dry scrub and low woodland, protected as a nature reserve, and the shore is a mix of beach and rock.
The island is known for its wildlife, particularly the green turtles that come ashore to nest on its beaches and its large colonies of seabirds.
