Ridge-top enclosures
The palace and mosque complexes form large, open rectangles along the ridge. Their straight edges and courtyards read clearly from above, almost like an architectural plan.

Fatehpur Sīkri was founded by the Mughal emperor Akbar in the 1570s and served as his capital for little more than a decade before the court moved on. The city he built on a sandstone ridge west of Agra survives in remarkable condition and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its courtyards, pavilions and the Jama Masjid still sit along the high ground.
On a map the monumental complex stands out from the present-day town at the foot of the ridge. It shows up as a set of large, rectilinear enclosures, aligned and open, very different from the tighter lanes below. Traces of the old city wall and the approach roads complete the picture, and the Buland Darwaza gateway marks the mosque's southern edge.
A Fatehpur Sīkri map poster captures that rare contrast between a planned imperial ensemble and the organic town that grew around it. It suits admirers of Mughal architecture, travellers who came here on a day from Agra, and anyone drawn to cities that were built for a court and then left behind.
The palace and mosque complexes form large, open rectangles along the ridge. Their straight edges and courtyards read clearly from above, almost like an architectural plan.
The monumental gateway on the southern side of the Jama Masjid rises above the town. On the map it sits where the lanes below meet the high ground of the complex.
The present-day settlement spreads along the base of the ridge in denser, irregular lanes. It provides a lively counterpoint to the orderly geometry of the Mughal city.
